What on earth is a Writer-in-Residence?!

Picture
These are academic staff from Hull University having a right laugh trying to write a love poem using only selected vocabulary from their Mission Statement! (The end result was brilliant, and they posted it up all over their department.)

I've worked as Writer-in-Residence for a whole range of organisations, and each residency has been completely different from the last - and equally fascinating.  It's a brilliant way for an organisation to learn to work more creatively, and I love finding all sorts of ways to stretch myself - and them!

I've been Writer-in-Residence for:

Leeds Hospitals Trust (the biggest in Europe)

The Pennine Watershed Landscape project (a huge 3-year Lottery-funded project - and we won two major awards because our project was recognised as involving so many hard-to-reach groups)

The NHS in the North West (working with top researchers)

Hull University Business School (working with students and academic staff)

The Annual Midwives' Conference (two years running)

Impressions Photography Gallery and York City Art Gallery

Ty Newydd - The Welsh National Writing Centre

Kirklees Libraries

Temple Newsam stately home

And I've been awarded an International Writers' Fellowship - twice - by the Hawthornden Trust
