Calder Valley Heritage Trails
For the last two years I've been working on a series of 13 heritage e-trails that cover all sorts of aspects of the history, landscape, ecology, and industrial heritage of the Calder Valley in Yorkshire - a stunning part of the world (where I happen to live!).
I've worked with a whole range of volunteer groups, social historians, and village residents keen on getting their neck-of-the-woods better appreciated. It's been great fun working with them.
I've helped them bring their trails to life by dramatising events from the 1700s to the present day, and capturing relevant sounds: water power, clogs on stone steps, packhorses slopping over the moors... We've recreated Emmeline Pankhurst's passionate pleas for women's right to vote. We've got trees to talk - about their various roles in the valley's industries and folklore over the centuries. And we've become mill owners -grumbling over the new laws to prevent children working more than 10 hours a day!
This area is really rich in all sorts of history. I thought I knew a lot about my area, but I've learned absolutely masses.
The e-trails are available as downloads to your phone or tablet - so you're able to view lots of historical images, and listen to all the tracks. They're also each available in booklet form.
Click here to listen to them, download them, and order booklets.
